Monastery of Santa Maria de Almoster - XIIIth
century

In Almoster, 12 Km
from Santarém, there is this beautiful monument
of the l3th century, which is terribly damaged.
Its gothic portic and the wooden door decorated
with bronze date back to 1686.
The monastery was founded in 1289 by D.
Berengária Aires, wife of D. Rodrigo Garcia, and
according to ancient narrativas, by the time the
founder died (l3lO) it wasn't finished.
The church has three naves divided by columns of
ogival arches and has beautiful glazed tiles of
the l7th century.
The golden carved wood of the l7th century is
also worthy of note.

On
the left side of the transept is the niemorial stone of
the founder D. Berengária Aires (l3lO), and on the left
of the chancel the memorial stone of D. Gil Eanes da
Costa and his wife dating from 1542.
The church has 14 secondary altars.
In the cloisters, which are terribly damaged many other
tombs of knights are to be found.
