Monastery of Santa Maria de Almoster
Monastery of Santa Maria de Almoster - XIIIth century

In Almoster, 12 Km from Santarém, there is this beautiful monument of the l3th century, which is terribly damaged.
Its gothic portic and the wooden door decorated with bronze date back to 1686.
The monastery was founded in 1289 by D. Berengária Aires, wife of D. Rodrigo Garcia, and according to ancient narrativas, by the time the founder died (l3lO) it wasn't finished.
The church has three naves divided by columns of ogival arches and has beautiful glazed tiles of the l7th century.
The golden carved wood of the l7th century is also worthy of note.

On the left side of the transept is the niemorial stone of the founder D. Berengária Aires (l3lO), and on the left of the chancel the memorial stone of D. Gil Eanes da Costa and his wife dating from 1542.
The church has 14 secondary altars.
In the cloisters, which are terribly damaged many other tombs of knights are to be found.

in Octávio Mendes. Santarém Monumental.
