Church of Santa Iria XIIth century
Church of Santa Iria XIIth century
Situated at Ribeira de Santarém, people think it must have been founded by the goths, although there are other suppositions that its building was in the l2th century, anyway as far as we know its rebuilding was in the l7th century.
The front is in baroque style (l688) with a niche where we can see the image of Santa Iria. The interior has three naves separated by four columns.
Beautiful glazed tiles of the l7th century cover the walls, and deserves special attention those under the choir, which represem Christ at the river Jordan. There are other figurativa glazed tiles in the room next to the sacristy.
A very beautiful and valuable medieval image of Christ crucified, showing a painful expression, an arm descending from the cross and the feet not superposed, is worth to be seen.
There are many inscriptions on the floor marking several graves among which can be found the one of Domingos Antunes (Blacksmith) whose symbol is an horseshoe.
On the right side, an inscription on the wall marks the tombs of the holy sacrament brotherhood, dating of January 1773.

in Octávio Mendes. Santarém Monumental.
