Marvila Church XIIth century
Marvila Church XIIth century
Its building, which is put down to king Afonso Henriques, includes gothic, manuelinos and renascentist elements, being considered one of the richest monuments of Santarém and of national interest.
The church is divided in three naves, separated by twelve columns.
The walls are covered by l7th century glazed tiles, of two designs, and on the connections of the columns arches there are glazed tiles medallions representing parts of the litany.
Nine gothic windows, four on the left side and five on the right, light up the church.
At the high-altar the golden retable of carved wood is of great beauty.
Coming from the chancel on the left side and by the first column stands the pulpit, beautifully decorated with eleven columns.
There are many graves in the temple but difficult to identify, except for the memorial stone on the wall of the secondary altar, on the right side, which belongs to Paulo Pedrosa Meireles, who was the Vicar of Marvila.
The portic of the l6th century, manuelino style, deserves a special attention.
