Chapel of our Lady of Monte
Chapel of our Lady of Monte
lt's a very interesting renaissance example, but very difficult to know when it was built. People think it was founded by King Afonso Henriques. The chapel has only a nave, and it was rebuilt in the l6th century, as one can see the date of 1533 at the front door.
The chancel has an ogival arch and on the floor one can see the grave of Duarte Sodré, adorned with coat of arms and flanked by lance and knight flag, dating back to the 25th August 1500.
Other graves can be seen in the chapel, as those of Aldonça Rodrigues (l426), of Ayres Lopes De Sequeira (l573), of Manuel Nhaia and many others difficult to identify.
In the chancel there is a niche keeping the patron saint image.
The inside walls have high stucce-facing glazed tiles of the l7th century.
People still worship a «PIETA» of the l7th century made of many-coloured wood and a beautiful image of Our Lady of Rosary.
There is also a beautiful pulpit whit ionic columns dating of 1623.
An elegant large porch, with attic columns at the entrance, extending south and east, gives an wellcoming look.
