| Age Level Structure | Concerning
the age level some changes happened, due to a low
birth-rate there is a decrease in the active population
and an increase of the elderly groups. The shape of the age pyramid, presenting a progressive base narrowing and a top enlargement, shows the municipality aging.

| Population Evolution | Thought
there is a general aging tendence, the Town population is
considerably younger. According to the previsions for the year of 2010, 1/4 of the population in Santarém will be more than 65 years old.

| Unemployment by Sectors of Economic Activity | The
municipality has 62 621 inhabitants, but it has an active
population of about 26 298 inhabitants, concerning the
year of 1991, which gives a general activity rate of 42%. The employment structure, according to the activity sector in the municipality showed an important decrease in the active poplulation, in the primary sector (during the sixties till 1991) 50% of the total population changed into 10% in 1991. In the secondary sector there was an increase from 22% in 1960 to 32% in 1991 and, in the tertiary sector there was an increase from 28% in 1960 to 58% in 1991. |
