Cabaças Tower XVth century
Cabaças Tower XVth century
Usually known as "cabaceiro", this tower is the "ex-libris" of Santarém.
lt has 22 metres high, and it was built during the reign of king Manuel, the first, although on other's opinion it was built during the reign of king João, the third.
It doesn't constitute a valuable archaeological monumento but it is the most interesting and familiar monument to the people of our town.
From the top of the tower we can enjoy a surprising scenery, being within sight all town and the "Lezíria" (water-medows) which draws away by the river Tagus.

in Octávio Mendes. Santarém Monumental.
Santarém: 1988
