Wood is beautiful,
tough, improves with age and if carefully looked
after, will last indefinitely. Wood is probably
mans oldest natural resource and its
history as a household article is as old as time
itself. Archaelogical excavations have uncovered
wooden utensils and bowls dating back thousands
of years which, when examined closely, resemble
many of the basic spoons and tools that we use
today.
Because it is a
relatively cheap natural material which is easily
worked, wood is widely used to make quality
products used in the preparation of food.
In Medieval Folklore
certain trees were held to be sacred with
supposedly protective powers. This superstition
is still relevant today as we continue to
"touch wood" to guard against bad luck.
Superstition apart,
the appeal of wood is that it is a tactile
material which invites you to touch as well as
look at it, a quality which man-made materials
could never hope to equal.
